A young disciple visited an ancient mystic in his cave. The young man desperately wanted to be a dedicated servant of God. So he sought the mystic for advice. “What must I do to truly walk after the Messiah?”
The mystic asked him, “What do you do now? What is your practice?”
“I follow my little rule: I read the Scripture daily, give alms, and prayer the prayers,” he replied.
At this, the old mystic stood straight up and reached to the ceiling with both hands. He seemed to be transformed and to fill the cave, not only in size but in brilliance as he eyes blazed and his countenance brightened.
“Why not,” he replied, “be consumed, instead?”
