Practicing the presence

Visit someone who serves as a shepherd or elder in your congregation. Take this person out for coffee and ask them what it is like to serve in the capacity of shepherd. Ask him to share the joys and challenges of serving in this capacity. Ask in what ways Jesus, the “good shepherd” serves as an example to the role of shepherding.

As a family project (or a small group project) host a dinner in honor of your shepherds/elders. Invite them and their wives to your home and serve them. Tell them this is not a “complaint” session or anything else—just a time to serve them and to say “thank you” for their work.

Prayers

  • Prayers of thanksgiving and petition
  • Journaling or Silent reflection
  • The “Lord’s Prayer”
