Practicing the presence

Part of the challenge in reading some of the Hebrew Scriptures is grasping who is “good”, “bad”, “justified” or evil. The story of the Bible is not so much about flawless heroes, but very flawed people who on their own and left to their own judgment tend to make a mess of things.

Spend time with a friend and talk about these stories you’ve been reading. While those who are bad might be pretty bad—how good are the “good”? What moral problems do they exhibit? What disturbs you about these stories? What do they tell you about God? What do these stories tell you about people? What do they reveal to you about yourself?

Prayers

  • Prayers of thanksgiving and petition
  • Journaling or silent reflection
  • “The Lord’s Prayer”
